Greetings, JG Families!

Our 1st month of school is coming to a close.  See below for important announcements and campus news!

Parking/Drop Off & Pick Up‼️
On September 30th the city is scheduled to complete their work on W. Milton, returning our pick-up/drop-off rotation to its previous routine.  YAY!!  Be on the lookout for an email this week from our Campus Manager alerting you of the change. In the meantime, please return to you cars promptly to make room for others to park in limited street spots. Save conversations with teachers and parents for another time and place and, please, do not converse in the streets. Thank you for making safe and respectful choices about when and where to catch up with community members after drop-off.

If you arrive late, avoid walking your child to his her/her classroom. Call or text the Campus Phone line so that a staff member can greet you child at the gate. We have an internal protocol that we kindly request be respected.  If morning circumstances make it challenging to drop off at the gate, such as when you are brining items for your child’s class or you need to talk to someone, walk to the Hay House office and staff member will be happy to assist you.

Good day, Garden Families!

Parent Orientation Recap 📕
Last night’s parent orientation night was a great success, thank you to all returning parents for joining us. If you missed the evening, we have saved a red orientation folder for you with important information for the year ahead.  It will be coming home in your child’s JG bag this week, please put it in a safe place to use as a reference.

Book Drive Results 🍕
We are giving families until Monday to turn in their books so we can finalize our count.  There is discrepancy between our count and the number of books purchased on your House Mamas' Amazon lists.  We can ONLY count the books that are physically on campus so . . . if you want to win … TURN IN YOUR BOOKS.  The suspense is killing us all but hang tight pizza party people, the end is near!

May Calendars 🗓
May calendars are up!  Please reference the Parent Portal to see what your child’s class is engaging in during our last month of school.

PTA ELECTION NIGHT, MAY 8th @ 6:30 PM 🙋🏻‍♀️
If you ever planned to come to a PTA meeting, this is the one to attend.  It will be held in Palazzo and the Parent Education Committee is providing refreshments.  Expect to hear from current PTA Committee Heads this week encouraging you to come out and represent the sub-committee(s) you marked interest in.  This is the night we establish who’s in charge for the 2019/2020 school year, a fun and exciting night you won’t want to miss. Be a part of the action, we will see you on Wednesday!

Parent Handbook 👪
Our parent handbook is undergoing revisions for the 2019/2020 school year.  Be on the lookout for an email indicating updated sections in the coming weeks.

Birthdays 🎈
Happy birthday this month to Veronica in the Hay House on May 5th, Edith in Casa on the 8th, Violet in Main on the 20th and Calder in the YCC on the 24th.  Teacher birthdays are Ms. Skylar (21!!) on the 12th and Ms. Annie on the 21st.  Happiest of birthdays to all of our May babies!

Last Day of School, May 23rd 🎶
Just a reminder our last day of school has an early dismissal schedule. Please reference the Parent Portal to see when you child’s class lets out and defer to your child’s lead guide on what this looks like for your class. After enjoying naptime at home, everyone will meet up at Cosmic Coffee & Beer for an off-campus community singalong celebration with Ms. Natalie.  We can’t wait to close out this stellar year together!

Summer School ☀️
If you are participating in our summer program, expect a welcome letter and supply list from your child’s guide to arrive in your inbox by May 30th.  Get ready for fun in the sun, summer schoolers!!

3/22/2019

Greetings, Julia’s Gardeners!

Garden Day, March 31st 10:00 - 12:00 🌱
Garden Day is next weekend!  Bring yourself, bring your family, bring a shovel… this is the day we set up our garden for the next 6 months and it’s an amazing community-filled day of fun and wonder.  The garden is what our school is centered on and it guides us everyday. Just as we follow the child’s lead, we also follow the lessons nature offers us.  This is traditionally our most well-attended community event and we are looking forward to our best turnout yet!

2019/2020 Returning Contracts Due March 25th 📃
If you are planning a return to the garden next fall be sure we have your contract in hand by March 25th.  Please include all required attachments for processing.  We cannot guarantee contracts received after March 25th — or incomplete contracts — will have classroom placement for fall 2019.

*** If you have not enrolled for the 2019/2020 school year click here or visit the Parent Portal and select "Fall/Spring Enrollment" and reserve your child’s space by March 25th ***

PTA Updates 🏫
The next PTA Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10th and the minutes from our last meeting are on the Parent Portal   There are still plenty of opportunities to get involved and this is a great time to do it — there are only 2 meetings left in the school year!  At the April meeting, we will be voting in the final draft of the bylaws, as well as finalizing committee memberships. Remember to take a look and comment if you have feedback on the google doc Oliver Caruso set up for us (thank you, Oliver!)  Looking ahead to May, elections for the 9 month 2019/2020 school year will take place and all current office terms will end. We still need Committee Heads for Fundraising and Hospitality, email our parent representative, Wency Martinez, at wencymartinez@gmail.com if you are interested in taking the lead on one of these committees.  Thank you for your involvement!

Book Fair, April 1st - 30th 📕
Our Book Fair kicks off April 1st and three communities, Hay/YCC, Main and Casa, will compete for the prize to see who can collect the most books for their classroom.  Each lead will provide a wish list for her class and families have 30 days to donate as many on the list as possible.  Last year, the YCC/Hay House were the winners and the prize was an awesome catered tacos n' rita party at El Mercado!  This year, we will be putting something equally as fun together to be announced April 1st.  Woohoo!!

Parent Portal & Reminders 👩‍👩‍👦
Just a reminder that our Parent Portal is the go-to spot for all announcements, classroom events, calendar, enrollment information, documents, PTA information and more!  In short, defer to the port .. . port-al, that is, for all your JG needs!

It was suggested by a parent that a schedule of when you can expect information updates would be helpful.  See below for a list of when you can expect information to be coming your way and where you can find it!

Curriculum Calendars: on the first Thursday of the month guides turn in their curriculum calendars to administration and they are live on the Parent Portal by Sunday night

Garden Calendar: the Garden Calendar is updated weekly and new garden photos are posted to the online album on the Parent Portal

Notes from Coffee Talk Re: Structural Changes in 2019/2020 School Year on 3/11/19 (FAQs)

3/17/2019

What does “high ratio” mean?
Parents at our coffee on Monday had questions about our program moving to “high ratio” inside the classrooms.  It was suggested by Ali Ronder, a respected alternative education leader in the Austin community and one of the ICARE representatives present at our talk (JG’s accreditation with ICARE is currently pending), that we should first define what “high ratio” means from a broader context.  15 children aged 3 to 6 years to one adult and 1 adult to every 5/6 toddlers — our plans for the 2019/2020 school year — is considered well within the norm of childcare ratios in Texas.  So, although our ratios are projected to be higher than they are now (currently 10 to 1 in primary and 4 to 1 in toddler) it is more accurate to refer to the move as being to larger classroom sizes than to high ratio.
Picture

When speaking in the context of a primary Montessori program specifically, 30 children with a seasoned Guide and an assistant is common. The classroom functions best when there is a balanced population of children with 6-12 representatives at each age/level.  In a smaller classroom, there is less modeling from older children so the younger students rely more on the teacher’s instruction, or default to younger child modeling, which can hinder functional independence and refinement of other soft skills that are a large and important part of the Montessori curriculum.  A handout explaining the value of a large classroom experience and why it works was provided at the information session on Monday.

“But I thought JG was all about low ratios.  Why the change, Katherine?”

Up to now, Julia’s Garden has blossomed by following the evolution of properties acquired and by serving a need within the community. From this very fluid growth emerged 4 small, young classrooms with 4 trained Montessori guides and 4 assistants (8 teachers total serving 47 children, a very low 6 to 1 ratio, not including support guides). Now that our student body has aged, we are purposefully relocating the children, the environments and the staff so that all can serve and be served optimally.  A normalized group of of 3, 4 and 5 year old children who have previously attended our program do not need the support that they did when they first began.  They are ready for a greater challenge and greater socialization opportunities; they deserve this time to show us what they are capable of. By placing too many adults in a community we risk doing them a disservice.
Our youngest community members are growing, too, and by fall semester will be ready to show their younger friends the ropes.  A 12-14 member toddler environment with elder, returning members offers more balance and stability than a new classroom does.
The merging of classrooms will also allow our staffing resources to be put to better use. Placing more than one talented, trained guide in front a of population that only requires one, especially when other departments are lacking, does not serve the greater good of the school.

“What is an ‘education specialist’ and what will her role be?”

The education specialist plays a key role in accountability next year. The addition of this department allows us to ensure without fault that each child enrolled is being looked after both socially and academically every step of the way.
The specialist will make preliminary assessments as needed and hold parent conferences to make behavior and learning plans.  She will float both on schedule and as needed between classes, offering tutoring, therapy, gross and fine motor enhancement — anyone who requires support, her job will be to make sure it is provided.  She will also serve as our school’s parent liaison and plan parent education sessions, advocating for the essential need of the parent-teacher partnership which best supports student successes at school.
“Why can’t we know who our child’s teacher is going to be next year before we enroll?”
This was another question that came up for parents.  Ali Ronder explained during our talk that the process a school undergoes to assign children to classrooms — be it public or private --  is quite similar: first, the parents are asked to provide a deposit in February which will allow for admissions to know which families are planning to return.  From there, the school can look to their wait list fill spots, allowing incoming families to plan.  As classrooms are beginning to take shape, contracts and/or letters of intent are accepted from the teaching staff, letting administration know their situation for the upcoming semester (aka, “I am planning to return but we are growing our family over summer and need maternity leave; or “I would love to come back but in a different role” etc).  From there, negotiations are made, meetings held and interviews are conducted to fill any spots that may be open.  This process is completed no earlier than May.  As a result, parents do not typically know their child’s class assignment until the summer months.  It would be unfair, Ali noted, for some parents to know their child’s class assignment in advance and others not. This system of notification would inevitably cause controversy within a community.  In short, the process all begins with a parent commitment.

“When will we know the prices and program offerings for next year?”

Prices and programs are on the enrollment forms located on the Parent Portal. Prices are also publicly posted on our website under Tuition & Pricing. Current prices can always be found on our website and are updated the spring semester prior to the start of the new school year.

Greetings, Parents and Staff!

What an exciting newsletter this is for Julia’s Garden. Please see below for important community announcements.

Open Houses Next Week 🏠
Sneak Peek Week in Taller
Feb. 25 - 28th, 1 - 4:00 PM daily
This is a unique opportunity for you and your child to visit Taller before anyone else!  If your child is 5+ years, you should have received an invitation to join us in Palazzo this week. Everyday after morning dismissal until 4:00 PM, Ms. Louise and Ms. Katherine will be available to answer questions while you and your child explore the work set out in our newest classroom.  We hope everyone invited is able to take a few minutes to stop in and see it before the open house Thursday!

Wine + Wisdom and Open House Night
Feb. 28th, 4:30 - 8:00 PM
This Open House is will be our biggest event of the year (Farm to Fork, aside - hard to beat that one!)  We always host a juicy talk on brain development, courtesy of Mrs. Meagan, in the Main House.  This year, we are opening the event to the greater Austin community by hosting a Sip n’ See to show prospective parents just how awesome our parent and staff community is.  Plan to attend to learn more about the great things your child is doing inside of their classroom each day, as well as have fun showing off your school!

2019/2020 Returning Contracts 📃
Visit the Parent Portal to reserve your child’s space for next year in our Fall/Spring 2019-2020 school year program.  Current families have until March 25th to save their space for the coming year.  Please note we are not able to process contracts without all required documents submitted. If you have any questions surrounding the enrollment process you are welcome to contact us at admin@juliasgardenmontessori.com.

New Email Addresses 📫
Our staff has new email addresses!  You may continue to use the gmail addresses to contact your classroom with general questions but if you need to reach your lead guide or a particular staff member, please direct your message to the new @juliasgardenmontessori.com address.

New Friends 👭
This month Adieline Ridge and Jette Hovart began classes in the YCC and Veronica Jones will start in the Hay House.  Welcome, new friends and families!

PTA Meeting Update 👩‍👩‍👧‍👦
Our PTA Meeting was a great success, thanks again to everyone who came last Tuesday evening.  Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 13th at 6:30 PM.  An email with more information on how to participate, as well as a link to the minutes on the parent portal, soon to follow!

Parent Portal Glitch 😣
The Parent Portal has a glitch and is kicking folks off the pages they have access to at random. If this happens to you, please email the office and we will take care of it immediately.

Summer School Enrollment ☀️
A reminder that Summer School Enrollment is open to currently enrolled JG students until February 28th. There is still time to reserve your child’s space for one or more of our super fun summer sessions.  After February 28th, we will open enrollment to the greater Austin community.

Parking Reminders 🚙
Please remember to park mindfully on S. 3rd Street, please do not — even for a minute — block driveways and always park with plenty of room for parked cars to exit. Thank you for continuing to be considerate of our neighbors!

Firefly Fridays 🧚🏽‍♀️
Just a reminder that this week ends the first super-successful session of Firefly Enrichment Fridays.  This first 6 weeks has flow by! If you are interested in enrolling for the second session, there is still space.  Highlighted guests slated to return are the Green Ninja, Melodia Bilingual Music, Hedda's Magical Myths + Literature Hour and more!

Structural Changes for 2019/2020 🏠
We are launching a new set up for a new school year: Julia’s Garden will host 3 classrooms for 3 levels of education: I.C., 18 months - 3 years; Primary, 3 - 6 years and Taller, 6 - 9 years.  We will continue to examine each child’s skill set and place them in the environment that will serve them the best, with age only being one of the factors.  When filling out your fall contracts (now on the parent portal), please defer judgement to your child’s lead teacher, or administration, as to which class is appropriate to enroll for next year.  When in doubt, ask!  It is a case-by-case question and conferences over the next two weeks will help to give insight on which classroom will suit your child best in the coming year.

We are redistributing resources to achieve a more balanced staff to serve our parent and student body. Please see the attached document to review the changes we are making for the better in the 2019/2020 school year!
